While looking at the bottom of several plants at Arenas del Mar, we noticed a very interesting and special lizard called the Slender Anole (Norops limifrons). Lizards are in mating season and the males are competing to attract the attention of the females. The one we saw was working on just that, doing lot of pushups and also showing its nice and colorful dewlap (throat). The idea is to impress the female and tell her how handsome and sexy he is.
We were very fortunate because to see that moment and get a picture of their mating rituals is not easy. Normally the female will lay one egg every few weeks. About 50 days after the baby lizard hatches, it is ready to find a mate. This lizard is able to live about 5 months.
These lizards are found in Costa Rica until about 2,500 feet above sea level. They are insect eaters and their color helps camouflage them, because the anoles have many predators like monkeys, snakes and hawks.
