Sand Sculpture Event at Arenas del Mar

Beautiful Playa Espadilla, the beachfront of Arenas del Mar Beachfront & Rainforest Resort, was recently chosen as the sight of a Travel Channel special called “Sand Guys”. The six sand sculpture artists and the Travel Channel crew first arrived on February 25, and spent time at our sister hotel, Finca Rosa Blanca, visiting the organic coffee plantation there and learning about the coffee growing and refining process, as well as the importance of the coffee business to Costa Rican communities. To incorporate coffee as much as they can, the team plans to use coffee grounds as part of their sand mixture, something never before attempted.

Once arriving at Arenas Del Mar Beachfront & Rainforest Resort, they began working on the construction of the sand sculpture. Over a five day period, the artists used small tools such as shovels and spatulas along with tanks of water to complete the enormous sculpture. Wanting to include aspects of the local area, they integrated symbols of Costa Rica in the artwork such as sloths hanging from tree branches, butterflies and flowers as well as two women enjoying a cup of coffee and behind them an antique coffee making machine.

The program will air in July and features nine other episodes, featuring the team's sand castle building talents around the globe, always ensuring they include a distinctive local flavor. The show will demonstrate the entire process of building the sand sculpture, from its inception to completion.
