While driving to Manuel Antonio National Park, something attracted our attention and we stopped to see what it was. Much to our surprise, it turned out to be the biggest toucan of Costa Rica, the Chestnut Mandibled Toucan (Ramphastos swainsonii), who was eating berries in a high tree. The guide set up his telescope and showed it to all of us.
The size of the toucan is almost 24 inches (60 cm) and it is the biggest one of the six types that live here. The toucan feeds from seeds, fruits, lizards and insects. We were so excited because it is a beautiful bird, and we were able to take great photos of it in its natural environment. When we arrived at the park, we observed a lot more wildlife like iguanas, insects, sloths, frogs and more!
