HAVE YOU SEEN A TAMANDUA?

In Costa Rica, one of the most intriguing animals that everybody wants to see is the Tamandua Mexicana, or the anteater. Here in the reserve of Arenas Del Mar and also in Manuel Antonio National Park we can find it with very good luck. It is more nocturnal, medium size, mostly golden, with a contrasting black vest. It has a prehensile tail. It is semi-arboreal and travels on the ground and through the trees in search of termite and ant mounds. Thanks to its long tongue, it can get insects from very deep holes; the tongue can be as long as 25 inches! Sometimes the tamandua can be located by the tearing sounds it makes as it rips into rotten wood. When threatened, it sits up, using its tail as brace, and strikes out with its massive foreclaws.
